February 2012

Only 16 months on from TSR’s last big software update, we were waving goodbye to vBulletin version 3.8 and hello to vB4.0.

This means nothing to most people, so I won’t bore you with the boring bits, just to say that we like to roll with the times and make sure the site behind the scenes is the best it can be. This means infrequent upgrades on quite a large scalescale, although no more for a long while now though, promise!

At the point of update, the site was down for a number of hours which brought wide-spread mourning and kind messages from our TSR addict faithful.

This did however pave the way for #TSRMan, ready to fill the void.

For those of you not aware #TSRMan is the familiar face that appears on the site, should we be down for scheduled maintenance.

Members decided that #TSRMan needed a makeover, so provided many a photoshopped alternative to our famous face of TSR.

Recognising outstanding mod contributions

by fleur de lis on February 21, 2012

in TSR News

In recognition of the hard work our moderators do on the site, we like to recognise both the mods and their contributions to moderation and the community as a whole.

Today we would like to award Mad Vlad for his contributions to the site and moderation team throughout his time as a mod. He was an especially committed mod who was continually proactive in trying to improve the site and moderation. He brought expertise from his offline job to the role of moderation and taught us all a thing or two!

We were very lucky to have such an oustanding mod on the team and would like to publicly thank him and congratulate him for his contributions.

Last week CN, TSR’s Chief Exec’ made 3 big announcements all bundled into one, detailing the acquisition of Get Revising & Connect Publications, the new student room division known as TSR Learning, as well as the news that TSR’s parent company Acumen Professional Intelligence will be re-named The Student Room group.

All big changes in their own right, as well as a transition of TSR’s sister site, Coursework.info to Marked By Teachers…

Read CN’s announcement on the forum for full details and find out what this means for The Student Room and its members.

in TSR News

This month’s Member of the Month award goes to commandant, for his excellent contributions to the Fitness forum. Commandant put forward the idea of running a TSR Transformation Contest and put a lot of time and effort into turning the idea into a reality. The transformation contest has its own dedicated forum and is proving to be really successful so far! A great community initiative.

Congratulations commandant, and thank you for working so hard to make the contest a success!

PS. We are now accepting member of the month nominations from members. Make your nomination here!

TSR is recruiting a Testing Intern!

by cj on February 3, 2012

in TSR News

We’re looking for new member of the team to join our Brighton office, whose main tasks will be working with the project and development team to ensure what we develop is fit for purpose and bug free!

You will need to be:

  • Highly organised
  • Diligent and have great attention to detail
  • Technically comfortable and very online savvy
  • Good at juggling lots of tasks
  • Able to deal with tight timelines and working under pressure

Desirable:

  • Previous experience of web testing would be advantageous, but not essential.
  • As would any knowledge of testing tools.
  • Some technical knowledge/experience would also be helpful, perhaps a grounding in HTML/CSS/Javascript and/or PHP/MySQL
  • An understanding of the development lifecycle, and in particular how software testing fits in

Most important though is to have an inquisitive mind and great attention to detail. Being keen to understand how things work, how to break them and how to fix them!

It is likely the position will run for 2 months, with the possibility of extension after this. The successful applicant should be expected to start immediately.

The rate of pay will depend upon the candidate and their experience, but typically £8 per hour, based on a regular working week.

For full details of the role and information on how to apply, click here.

Closing date is the 29th February 2012.

Study Help Member of the Month – January 2012

by Illusionary on February 2, 2012

in TSR News

It’s undoubtedly been a busy month in Study Help, with many members sitting A-Level and GCSE public exams (and good luck if you’re one of the few with your last A-Level papers left to go). We’ve seen some excellent contributions from many members but out of everything that we’ve seen, one member stood out as deserving of the first Study Help Member of the Month award for 2012. Congratulations go to Arsey, who has again been fantastic in supporting others in the Maths forum in Study Help – thank you!
