We’ve got a few exciting changes happening for this month’s Study Help Member of the Month award! First of all, we’re hoping to make more members aware of the fantastic contributions of our monthly winners by posting the announcement thread in the forum in which they’ve been most helpful. We’ll also be crediting the winners more widely, both on the blog and in the newly launched newsletter, TSR Times.

Secondly, I’m pleased to announce that we will be increasing the prize awarded each month. As well as a month’s subscription, we will also be awarding an Amazon voucher for £10 to our winner.

So, with all that out of the way, on to our winner. This month, we’d like to congratulate Jale, for his excellent contributions in both the Chemistry and Biology forums – thank you!

TSR gets well and truly festive

by cj on December 1, 2011

in TSR News

As of early this morning The Student Room fell dark, gained a snowy backdrop and accumulated a number of decorative baubles to welcome the month of December and the festive season running up to Christmas.

Along with the temporary theme, for the first time we’ve also opened the TSR Chrismas Grotto forum, where those eager to talk all things Christmas can get chatting, whilst the scrooges can simply sit and shake their heads.

We’re also running 2 official competitions this year. Get involved in both the TSR Christmas Cooking Competition and TSR Best Dressed Christmas Tree Competition. We’re giving away presents for the best 3 in each competition, we look forward to seeing your creations!

So get chatting, baking, decorating, listening, watching, shopping… and anything and everything else you love to do in the run up to the 25th :D

so says online community consultant Richard Millington of FeverBee.

Richard talks of the 6 key factors that makes TSR one of his “favourite examples of a successful online community”

These being:

  1. The Platform
  2. Interactions
  3. Events / Activities
  4. Strong sense of community
  5. Monetization
  6. Wealth of knowledge

Thanks Richard!

As  we’re always saying, the site wouldn’t be anything without it’s members, moderators and members willingness to get involved and help each other out :)

by fleur de lis on November 23, 2011

in TSR News

In addition to the annual mods meet, we also have smaller meets throughout the year to discuss section-specific issues. This weekend the Study Help mods met up for a pow wow about all things relating to the Study Help section.

We had a very productive afternoon and covered a lot of ground! Some of the key topics we discussed were:

- Written and practical exam discussion policy

- Management of past papers on TSR

- Review of forum structure

- Review of moderation coverage

- Study Help Member of the Month (click  here for more information)

- Academic level thread tags – currently being trialled in the Maths forum (click here for more information)

- Textbooks Classifieds forum

Thanks to the  mods who took time out of their weekends to attend, and keep an eye out on the forum for future Study Help developments!

Today the first issue of the TSR Times was mailed out to members of The Student Room. WHOO HOO!!

Click here to view the first issue of TSR Times

TSR Times is very much a community newsletter, bringing together highlights (and some lowlights *ahem*) from the previous month on The Student Room – The world’s largest student community.

The name TSR Times was chosen in a site wide survey back in the summer. Did you know there used to be a member produced ezine with the same name? Older members will know it was TSR’s own Private Eye crossed with a dollop of Perez bitchiness. It died out… but from the ashes this slightly cleaner newsletter has risen ;)

Regular features (again asked for in that summer survey) will be:

* Awards for member of the month – mod of the month, member of the month and study help MOTM

* Member shout outs

* Features (sometimes linking to a newsletter theme)

* Hot forum threads

* Members showing off their ‘skills’ in Creative Corner

It’s a perfectly formed collection of cool stuff from all our members. If you’re a TSR member find out how you can get involved with the next issue and please tell us what you think so we can continue to improve it!

Thanks

J and CJ

p.s To quote one of our very sensible moderators…MHorman “TSR Times about to be read with a cup of tea…”

p.p.s Want to get the newsletter to your inbox each month? It’s simple – Sign up to TSR

p.p.p.s another MHorman quote “TSR Times was interesting :)

In recognition of the hard work our moderators do on the site, each month we award up to two mods for outstanding contributions.

This month, the award goes to:

letsdothetimewarpagain for her dedication behind the scenes in managing the Debate and Current Affairs team and development of the section. She has been brilliant at supporting the mods and helping the new recruits settle in, and has been very organised and proactive when it comes to developing the section.

and

secretmessages who has used his impressive technical skills to make us several Firefox and Chrome extensions which make modding so much easier and more efficient! With the site having grown so large, the volume of work has increase substantially over the last couple of years, and these extensions make a real difference.

Congratulations to both letsdothetimewarpagain and secretmessages, and thank you !

Changes to TSR Careers

by J on November 16, 2011

in TSR News

We want to do what we can to support you into work and to help young people generally make the right choices from an early age. Updates are underway in the careers area of The Student Room, led by ice_cube, to make our resources and forums more comprehensive and useful.

Forum updates:

We’ve introduced a range of new career forums, this is to give us better coverage so whatever your chosen area of interest there is somewhere for you to talk about it with others. These include:

- Arts, Heritage, Charities and Media
- Marketing, Sales and PR
- Engineering and Science
- Property, construction, transport & logistics
- Entrepreneurs & Freelance

These new forums are bedding down nicely and some good discussion is developing!

Some other forums have been moved around a bit. The forum for Temporary and Part Time Jobs has moved up to be a higher level forum, due to how much traffic it was getting. We’ve also expanded the Apprenticeship forum to include other alternatives to university, and separated these from the career sector forums. We realise that university is not the right route for everyone, and are hoping to get more support and advice on the site for alternative routes into careers.

We also added some internship subforums to some of the biggest sections:

- Legal
- Finance and Accountancy
- Investment Banking and Consultancy

Previously, the internship discussion for all areas had been linked with volunteering. Now, the threads about work experience and volunteering that relate to specific careers have been moved into the forums or subforums for the industries they relate to. This will mean more people with knowledge about specific industries will see them, and be able to offer advice!

The Volunteering forum has now been moved to be a subforum of General University Discussion, along with the Gap year students forum, as they didn’t really fit in with the careers discussions, and are more suited to discussions about student life.

Finally, the whole section has been renamed as Careers and Jobs, to reflect the discussion of all levels of employment, rather than specific ‘career’ fields.

ALSO…

New content and advice is being written for the site, and there are more exciting changes to come in the following months. Updates coming soon.

We hope that you enjoy using the new forums, and some great discussion is generated!

by fleur de lis on October 12, 2011

in TSR News

We’re looking for some people to join the moderation team for the Fashion and Beauty forums. Are you interested in volunteering or do you know of someone who would make a good moderator in this section?

This section caters for discussion about all aspects of fashion and beauty from haircare, skincare, makeup, clothes and accessories to piercings and tattoos. We have an increasing male presence in the forums and are keen to encourage further growth of thie male community.

If you are interested in being a part of the Fashion and Beauty moderation team or you know of someone who would make a great addition to the team, check out the announcement which gives more details on how to apply/nominate.
